Podcast: Musician / Music Video Director MAX FARRELL

Since roughly 2018, Max Farrell has been making music videos for Blessings Infinity, an improvisational prog rock band that includes his fellow mates Ap Bergeron and Liam Blackwell. As he recounts in our roughly half-hour conversation, what began as a humorous thought soon materialized as what can be regaded as the end-product tied to the band’s latest album, Season One: a VHS release of the multipart music video.
There was a time when VHS was an important component to both help publicize an alnum or specific song, and even though the laserdisc format (and Betamax) offered superb sound, VHS HiFi was pretty damn good, and the most widely used home video format among average consumers. If laserdisc was the UHD of home video in the 1980s, then Betamax was the Blu-ray equivalent, and VHS DVD.
Season One isn’t a filmed concert, but a concept video that took almost a decade to assemble, edit, refine, and fine cut into a series of seven visual pieces that match the tone and soundscape of each track. Farrell’s usage of glitch video and experimental imagery is one of several topics we touch upon in BHA+’s first podcast of 2026, but as I state in my intro, the need to ask Farrell ‘Why VHS?’ stemmed from being asked to make a limited run of his film on VHS.

I’ll get into the nuances of transferring a digital file like an MP4 to VHS in an upcoming featurette, but the answer to Why? mandates getting into the short film’s genesis, the selective visual palette, and using more familiar consumer grade gear to create a really unique production. The album stands proudly on its own and works as a great concept album, but when supported by Farrell’s collage of interwoven imagery, it’s a very soothing experience.
Whether you prefer to sample Season One or any of Farrell’s video work before or after the podcast is up to you; you can listen to our conversation as an audio-only podcast via Libsyn, or as a visually enhanced version on YouTube.
I’ll have a separate blog about creating the visuals for the YT version using a late 1970s oscilloscope, a consumer S-VHS camcorder, and some digital layering.
